Friends of the Cycle Strongman: Remember this date.
A few days from now people all over the world will come together to say enough is enough. We want action on Climate Change and need to make our voices heard. This expedition is about helping foster the inspiration needed to make this change. And that change has to start with us!
Moving Planet will be a day to put our demands for climate action into motion—marching, biking, skating—calling for the world to go beyond fossil fuels.
WHY: For too long, our leaders have denied and delayed, compromised and caved. That era must come to an end; it’s time to get moving on the climate crisis.
September 24 is a day of action where people of the world are coming together to demand change – a much needed change:
- 100% renewable energy
- Zero carbon emissions
- Leaving fossil fuels in the ground
- Adaptation funding appropriate to the risks and damage already happening from climate impacts
- Funding for access to clean, renewable energy to lift people out of poverty
- The wealthy (people and countries) should do their fair share to fund a fair transition to 350ppm
- Reducing corporate power’s unfair influence on our leaders
- Stopping dirty energy projects
- Getting dirty money out of elections
- Supporting the rights of indigenous peoples
- Protecting human health
Science-based policies to get us back to 350ppm.
We can’t negotiate with chemistry and physics – that’s why we know we have to make sure that climate politics is in line with climate science. We must push for a UN climate regime that lays out the path for a socially just pathway below 350ppm. We must reach peak global emissions as quickly as (humanly) possible.
A rapid, just transition to zero carbon emissions.
We know that the only way to avert climate catastrophe is an emergency mobilization to cut emissions to zero as soon as possible. That’s why we’re encouraging organizing efforts everywhere to support programs that aim for:
A mobilization of funding for a fair transition to a 350ppm world.
Climate change is a moral crisis, and we know that one of the most important ways to address the issue is for the richest among us to help the poorest among us to deal with the burdens of climate change. We must support policies and programs that ensure financing for a fair transition, such as:
Lifting the rights of people over the rights of polluters.
The climate crisis is a human rights crisis. We must support policies and programs that lift up the rights of people over the rights of polluters, such as:
These are the simple demands we ask. Simple because we know what needs to be done. The climate science is there and so our voices need to be heard! So get a group of friends together, get on your bicycles and be part of this global movement.
Find an event near you, or start your own … and get involved!
What is the goal of the day?
The goal is to get moving beyond fossil fuels—both symbolically by pouring into the streets in the thousands on foot, bicycle and other means of sustainable movement, and politically by bringing powerful demands to our leaders that day to move beyond fossil fuels to a 350ppm world. Mobilizing for individual and community solutions will continue to be important—but one of the main goals for Moving Planet is to demand government action, especially in places where governments are stalling on climate action despite the overwhelming urgency of the science.
What will people do that day?
We encourage organizers to adapt the idea for Moving Planet to what is most appropriate and strategic locally. Possible action ideas include mass bike rides or marches, bike or walk to school/work days, a march or bike ride from a problem (e.g. coal plant) to a solution (i.e. solar plant), a mass march or bike ride to encircle a government building/deliver a petition, non-violent direct action at fossil fuel targets, and a long multi-day march or bike ride to demonstrate commitment.
