It began with a dream to travel the world and grew into something extraordinary; to complete an unassisted, low emission, solo, circumnavigation of the planet on a bicycle.
Having commenced in March 2009, the Cycle Strongman Expedition (CSX) is a monumental challenge both physically and mentally. The eight year odyssey will involve cycling around the globe (crossing each continent including; Australia, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Africa and the Americas, sailing across two oceans and eight seas and, if luck, health and good winds have it, lead all the way back home again.

What’s with the name “STRONGMAN”? It’s symbolic, representing the strength, sacrifice and fortitude needed to see this 8 year global expedition to conclusion. It also serves as a constant subtle reminder not to take myself or the expedition, too seriously! The “CYCLE” is the metaphorical symbol of life – the beginning, the journey and the return. The biCYCLE is thus the vehicle for discovery, completing the image nicely! As Lance Armstrong puts it, “It’s not about the bike, it’s a metaphor for life!”
Project Cycle
The CSX is as much a personal journey of discovery as a catalyst to inspire individuals. From encouraging cycling as a via transport alternative; to talking community, cultures and sustainability with schools; to highlighting the beauty of natural landscapes and environments; to sharing the trials and tribulations and the hard won lessons on the road, Project Cycle is a tool to connect.
Celebrating our shared humanity, project cycle seeks to help foster understanding and tolerance. In a world of increasing disconnect, each and every one of us has our own journey to accept our universal responsibility: What we do to the earth and each other we do to ourselves. There is no magic fix to tackling the numerous challenges we confront, yet the consequences of inaction are enormous. It is hoped that the expedition can help encourage that much needed change, by living that change, one person at a time.

In addition the CSX has proudly partnered with Oxfam Australia, a not-for-profit, secular organisation that is part of a global movement working hard to fight poverty and injustice. It is hoped that during the journey we can raise $100,000 for Oxfam (that’s $1 for every kilometer pedaled!) to help facilitate this change.
Support the expedition by donating today – even if it is just a small amount it all counts!
Seeking to minimise the impact on the natural environment, The Expedition is certified “Carbon Neutral” and teamed up with Leave No Trace Australia, a not-for-profit seeking to help others to enjoy the outdoors sustainably (For further info see the environment menu).
A hearty welcome
I invite you to share in this exciting expedition as the journey ventures to the four corners of the planet and visit some of the more remote and diverse regions on earth. Follow the challenges and triumphs along the way, see the vivid landscapes and learn about the unique cultures encountered as they’re documented on the CSX website.
Think you may be able to help? Know someone along the first stages of the route that may be able to provide shelter for the night? Please visit the Contact link or visit the Support section.
Happy and safe cycling to you all,
