It began with a dream to travel the world and grew into something extraordinary; an attempt to complete an unassisted, low emission, solo, circumnavigation of the planet on a bicycle! Pretty ambitious, no?
Having commenced in March 2009, the Cycle Strongman Expedition (CSX) was a monumental challenge both physically and mentally. The four year odyssey (eight planned) involved cycling around the globe (crossing; Australia, Asia, the Middle East and Europe).
I initially wrote on the website that if “luck, health and good winds have it, (the expedition would) lead all the way back home again”. Well, that took on a different meaning four years into the expedition when I decided to head home. It was a new found love that led me home. A love for myself, for my family and a desire to give back all the goodwill i’d experienced along the way.
What’s with the name “STRONGMAN”? It’s symbolic, representing the strength, sacrifice and fortitude needed to see this global expedition to conclusion. It also serves as a constant subtle reminder not to take myself or the expedition, too seriously! The “CYCLE” is the metaphorical symbol of life – the beginning, the journey and the return. The biCYCLE is thus the vehicle for discovery, completing the image nicely! The bike is simply the a metaphor!
The CSX is as much a personal journey of discovery as a catalyst to inspire individuals. But it’s also about sharing this journey with others and giving back. From speaking at events, sharing this tale in newspapers and magazines, this story is about living your bliss and seeing the grace unfold to a “more beautiful world our hearts tell us is possible”. Project Cycle is essentially a tool to connect.
Celebrating our shared humanity, this giving back is helping to foster understanding and tolerance. In a world of increasing disconnect, each and every one of us has our own journey to accept our universal responsibility: What we do to the earth and each other we do to ourselves. It is hoped that through this story it can help encourage that much needed change, by living that change, one person at a time.
In addition the CSX has proudly partnered with Oxfam Australia, a not-for-profit, secular organisation that is part of a global movement working hard to fight poverty and injustice. Together we have raised over $10,000 for Oxfam Australia! A big thank you to all those that made this possible, but lets not stop there, keep the donations coming in! – even if it is just a small amount it all counts!
A hearty welcome
I invite you to share in this exciting expedition as the journey ventures to the four corners of the planet and visits some of the more remote and diverse regions on earth. Follow the challenges and triumphs along the way, see the vivid landscapes and learn about the unique cultures encountered as they’re documented on the CSX website.
Happy and safe cycling to you all,
Founder, The Cycle Strongman Expedition and Project Cycle
