The Cycle Strongman Expedition

It began with a dream to travel the world and grew into something extraordinary; to complete an unassisted, low emission, solo circumnavigation of the planet on a humble bicycle.

earthHaving commenced in March 2009, the Cycle Strongman Expedition (CSX) is a test both physically and mentally. The eight year odyssey will involve cycling around the globe (covering Australia, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Africa and the Americas), sailing across two oceans and eight seas and (if luck, health and good winds have it) all the way back home again.

The CSX is as much a personal journey about self discovery as a catalyst to inspire individuals. The expedition is a tool to challenge each and everyone of us to accept our universal responsibility: What we do to the earth and each other we do to ourselves. There is no magic fix to tackling the numerous challenges confronting our generation, yet the consequences of inaction are enormous. It is hoped that the expedition can help inspire that change.

What’s with the name “STRONGMAN”? It’s very symbolic of the Expedition, representing the strength, sacrifice and fortitude needed to see this expedition through. It also serves as a constant reminder not to take myself or the expedition, too seriously. The “CYCLE” represents the circle – the metaphorical symbol of life – the beginning, the journey and the return. The biCYCLE is the vehicle for discovery, completing the image nicely! As Lance Armstrong puts it, “It’s not about the bike, it’s a metaphor for life!”

The CSX is proudly supporting Oxfam for the duration of the expedition. Oxfam Australia is a not-for-profit, secular organisation that is part of a global movement working hard to fight poverty and injustice. It is hoped that through inspiring individuals we can raise $1 for every kilometer pedaled. Help us to change the world. Even if it is just a dollar it all counts!

The expedition is looking for community groups, businesses and individuals to take up the CSX $1 per kilometer challenge and help Oxfam assist underprivileged communities the world over! We can’t do this alone and need your support! Help support the expedition by making a donation to Oxfam on the CSX Website. Every dollar counts!

I invite you to share in this exciting expedition as the journey ventures to the four corners of the planet and visit some of the more remote and diverse regions on earth. Follow the challenges and triumphs along the way, see the vivid landscapes and learn about the unique cultures encountered as they’re documented on the CSX website.

Think you may be able to help? Know someone along the first stages of the route that may be able to provide shelter for the night? Please visit the Contact link or visit the Support section.

Happy and safe cycling to you all,

Chris Roach
